Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk has a grid of straight streets, and most visitors stay in the centre around Kommunistichesky Avenue and Victory Square, walking distance to museums, cafes and Gagarin Park. The Gorny Vozdukh ski resort lies on the city's edge, a few minutes' drive away; staying at its foot suits daily skiing. The station area works for train trips around the island.
Skiing runs from mid-December to mid-April, most reliably January to March. June and July can be foggy; August is warmest and early September often clear.
The airport is about 10 km from the centre; flights from Moscow take 8–9 hours. The Vanino–Kholmsk ferry does not always take passengers.
