Where to stay
Nearly everything worth seeing is packed into the old centre between the Volga and the Kotorosl: the Strelka park, the Volga Embankment, the Spassky Monastery and the Church of Elijah the Prophet. Staying here means walking everywhere, and most streets are quiet apart from the main squares. The main station lies outside the historic area, a few stops away by public transport, and suits late arrivals or very short visits.
When to go
May to September is best. As a Golden Ring city, Yaroslavl is busy on summer weekends and over the May and New Year holidays.
Getting there
Lastochka and long-distance trains leave from Moscow's Yaroslavsky station; the fastest take about three hours. Drivers use the M-8 highway.
