Where to stay
Yalta rises from the sea like an amphitheatre, so slope matters. The seafront and old centre suit those who want the beach and cafes without climbs; higher up is quieter with wider views, but every return from the beach is uphill. Along the coast, Massandra, Livadia, Gaspra, Miskhor and Alupka offer parks, palaces and sanatoriums, with buses into town.
When to go
Swimming runs June to September. Mountains shelter the coast from northern winds, so spring and autumn are mild and good for walks. July and August are the busiest months.
Getting there
Trains and buses reach Simferopol via the Crimean Bridge. From there an intercity trolleybus runs to Yalta in almost three hours; buses and taxis are faster. Check whether Simferopol airport is operating.
