Where to stay
Volgograd stretches for dozens of kilometres along the Volga, so staying central matters. The Central District is the best base: the Alley of Heroes runs from Fallen Fighters Square to the Central Embankment, with museums, theatres and the river terminal nearby, and the main station is also in the centre. Mamayev Kurgan lies further north and is easy to reach by the light-rail tram; staying there is quieter, with fewer cafes.
When to go
Spring and early autumn are best; summers are hot. Rooms go early around 9 May and 2 February.
Getting there
Gumrak airport is open but sometimes briefly restricted, so check your flight. Long-distance trains arrive from Moscow.
