Historic Vladimir stretches along Bolshaya Moskovskaya Street, from the Golden Gate to the Dormition and St Demetrius cathedrals above the Klyazma. Staying along this strip puts monuments, museums and viewpoints within walking distance, and pedestrian Georgievskaya Street is pleasant in the evening. The main street carries traffic, so rooms facing a courtyard are quieter. The railway and bus stations sit side by side below the cathedrals, handy for late arrivals and trips to Suzdal.
May to October is best. Summer weekends and holidays are busy, as many visitors combine Vladimir with Suzdal and Bogolyubovo.
Lastochka and long-distance trains run from Moscow's Kursky station in about two hours. By road, take the M-7.
