Central Vladikavkaz is good for walking, and most visitors stay near Prospekt Mira, a pedestrian street with merchant houses and cafes, close to the Terek embankment and parks. The city is a base for mountain Ossetia: Dargavs and the Karmadon and Kurtatin gorges are about an hour away, Tsey further. Many do day trips; for a night among the mountains, move to lodges in the gorges.
May to October is the nicest time, with open mountain roads; autumn is often clear. Winter is quieter.
The airport is in Beslan, north of the city, with flights from Moscow. A direct train from Moscow takes about a day and a half.
