Where to stay
The Volkhov river splits Veliky Novgorod in two. The Sofia Side holds the Kremlin, St Sophia Cathedral and the main streets with cafes, and the station is close by, so it suits visitors exploring on foot. A footbridge leads to the Trade Side with Yaroslav's Court and old churches: fewer cars, quieter evenings and views of the Kremlin from the embankment. The Yuriev Monastery and Vitoslavlitsy open-air museum lie south of town.
When to go
May to September brings long June evenings, a beach under the Kremlin wall and river trips. Summer weekends are busiest.
Getting there
Lastochka trains from St Petersburg take about two hours. From Moscow, take the overnight train.
