Ulan-Ude has a small, walkable centre. Soviets Square, with its giant Lenin head and the opera house, leads down to the pedestrian part of Lenin Street, lined with merchant houses, cafes and the Hodegetria Cathedral by the Uda river. This is the most convenient area for a stay of a few days. The Trans-Siberian station is a walk from the square. The Ivolginsky Datsan lies outside the city and makes an easy half-day trip.
June to August is short and hot, ideal for Baikal trips. Winter is very cold, yet Sagaalgan, the Buddhist New Year, draws visitors.
Baikal airport, west of the city, is about half an hour by taxi. Trains from Irkutsk partly follow the shore of Baikal.
