Uglich is a small Volga town where almost everything worth seeing fits into the old centre: the kremlin with the Church of St Dmitry on the Blood, the embankment and museums. Staying there puts everything within minutes on foot. When cruise ships dock, the kremlin area gets crowded by day, but evenings are calm. Streets further from the river are quieter, with guesthouses suited to travellers with a car.
May to September is the season for river cruises and boat trips; weekends get busy. Winter is very quiet.
Buses from Moscow take about four hours. In summer, Volga river cruises stop here.
