Where to stay

Tomsk is a student city, and its centre runs along Lenin Avenue with the university grove, old campus buildings, theatres, cafes and paths down to the Tom river. Staying on or near the avenue keeps everything walkable. Tomsk is famous for carved wooden mansions, many of them in the Tatar Quarter and on nearby streets such as Krasnoarmeyskaya, which are quiet and atmospheric. Tomsk-I station is away from the main avenue.

When to go

Summer is green and calm; September brings students back. Winters are long and cold. Big conferences fill rooms.

Getting there

Tomsk sits on a branch off the Trans-Siberian; many come via Novosibirsk by bus or car. Bogashevo airport is about 20 km from the centre.
