Tobolsk has two levels. Up on Troitsky Cape stand the white-stone Kremlin and viewpoints over the Irtysh, with hotels and cafes nearby, making it the most convenient base. Below the hill lies old Tobolsk, with churches, wooden houses and quiet streets, reached by the Pryamskoy Vzvoz stairway; it is atmospheric but empty at night. The new districts and the railway station are some 10 to 15 km from the historic centre.
June to August is warmest. Winter is cold, but the Kremlin is striking in snow. Summer weekends are busy.
The airport, outside town, has flights to Moscow. Long-distance trains pass through, and buses from Tyumen take about four hours.
