Where to stay
Most sights are in the historic centre around Nevsky Prospekt, Palace Square and the Hermitage. Streets along the Fontanka, Moika and Griboyedov canals are quieter than Nevsky itself. The Petrograd Side and Vasilyevsky Island are more residential, but from spring to autumn the Neva bridges are raised at night, so getting back to the islands late can be hard. Ploshchad Vosstaniya, by the Moscow station, suits rail travellers.
When to go
The White Nights, from late May to mid-July, are the peak: central stays go early, especially around the Scarlet Sails festival. Rain is possible any month. Winter is dark but museums are calmer.
Getting there
From Pulkovo airport a bus runs to Moskovskaya metro, then the blue line goes to the centre; a taxi takes forty minutes to an hour. Trains from Moscow, including the Sapsan, arrive at the Moscow station on Nevsky.
