Sortavala is a small town on the northern shore of Lake Ladoga, and most visitors use it as a base. The centre near the station and waterfront suits travellers without a car: the vintage train to Ruskeala mountain park leaves from here, and in summer so do boats to Valaam. Out of town, guesthouses sit on bays and skerries or near Ruskeala itself, offering forest and water but few shops and little transport.
June to August is the main season for Valaam and skerry trips. Summer and New Year book up early; the Ruskeala canyon is lit in winter.
Lastochka trains from St Petersburg's Finlyandsky station take about four hours. The nearest airports are St Petersburg and Petrozavodsk.
