Smolensk sits on hills above the Dnieper, its centre ringed by an old fortress wall with towers. Staying inside that ring puts Lenin Street, Bolshaya Sovetskaya, Blonye Park and the museums within walking distance. The Dormition Cathedral on Cathedral Hill has wide river views. Streets are hilly, which matters with luggage. The station area lies lower by the river and suits short stops.
