Most people come for the Trinity Lavra of St Sergius, so the handiest base is a few blocks from it: you can enter before the tour groups arrive and watch the domes from Blinnaya Hill in the evening. Krasnoy Armii Avenue nearby has cafes and shops and quietens down at night. The station is also close to the monastery, while rooms in private houses further out are calmer but need a bus.
Pilgrims come all year. Major church feasts, May holidays and summer weekends are busiest; evenings and weekdays are quiet.
Suburban trains from Moscow's Yaroslavsky station take about 1 hour 20 minutes, express trains about an hour.
