Where to stay
Saratov stretches along the Volga, and the old centre is the most convenient base. Its axis is Kirova Avenue, a pedestrian street with the conservatory, cafes and shops, lively in the evening; side streets are calmer. The Kosmonavtov embankment is a long riverside promenade with views of the bridge to Engels. The station area sits at the other end of the centre, a walk or tram ride away.
When to go
Summer is hot and dry; May, June and September are most pleasant. Winter is cold and windy.
Getting there
Gagarin airport lies outside the city. Overnight trains from Moscow take about 14 hours.
