Rostov Veliky is a small town, and everything important is gathered around the Kremlin on the shore of Lake Nero. Staying nearby puts the walls, belfries and churches a few minutes away, with paths leading down to the water. The surrounding low-rise streets are full of guesthouses and very quiet at night. The St Jacob Saviour Monastery stands on the lakeshore west of the centre, and the station suits late arrivals.
May to September is best. Summer weekends bring tour buses, but fewer people stay overnight than in Yaroslavl or Suzdal.
Rostov-Yaroslavsky station is on the Moscow–Yaroslavl line; some Lastochka trains stop here, taking just over two hours from Moscow. Local trains and buses run from Yaroslavl.
