Where to stay
Pyatigorsk is the most urban of the Caucasian Mineral Waters resorts and a handy base for the whole region. The centre, between Tsvetnik Park, Kirov Avenue and the foot of Mount Mashuk, keeps the springs, the Proval cave and the Lermontov sites within walking distance. The Mashuk slopes are greener and quieter, with sanatoriums and trails. Trams run through the city, so staying near a tram line helps.
When to go
It works all year. Summer is warm and busiest; spring and early autumn suit day trips to Elbrus and Dombay.
Getting there
Mineralnye Vody airport is about half an hour away by car. Frequent suburban trains run from Mineralnye Vody station, and long-distance trains stop in Pyatigorsk.
