Where to stay
Pskov grew around its Kremlin, known locally as the Krom, on a cape between the Velikaya and Pskova rivers. The old quarters between the Krom and October Square keep walls, cathedrals, museums and embankments within walking distance. Across the Velikaya, Zavelichye is a calm district with monasteries and the finest view of the Krom, a short walk over the Olginsky Bridge. The station area suits late trains and early trips to Izborsk and Pechory.
When to go
May to September is best for walks and day trips. Summer weekends are busiest; winter is quiet.
Getting there
Lastochka trains from St Petersburg's Baltiysky station take about three and a half hours. An overnight train runs from Moscow, and a few flights a week.
