Where to stay
Ples is a tiny town whose main street is the Volga embankment. Staying by the water means morning walks to the pier, the Levitan museum and sunsets over the river; it also gets crowded on summer weekends. The streets climbing from the embankment are quieter, with river views, but steep. Along the Volga around town there are many country complexes and guesthouses, easiest to reach by car.
When to go
May to September, especially summer weekends, is the busiest time. Early autumn is quiet and scenic. New Year is popular too.
Getting there
The nearest city is Ivanovo, reached by Lastochka trains from Moscow; from there take a bus or taxi. In summer river cruises call here.
