Lenin Avenue runs from the station down to Lake Onega and is the city's backbone. Staying on it or nearby keeps the embankment, museums and cafes within walking distance, and in summer the pier for boats to Kizhi is close. The Onega embankment, lined with sculptures from twin cities, is the favourite place for evening walks; lake-view rooms are popular but busy streets below. The station area suits a stopover on the way north.
Summer brings white nights and boats to Kizhi until September; July and August are busiest. Winter suits dog-sled and snowmobile trips.
Lastochka trains from St Petersburg take about five hours; overnight trains run from Moscow. Flights arrive from Moscow.
