Where to stay
Pereslavl-Zalessky is small but spread out. The centre with the earthen kremlin rampart and the old cathedral lies by a small river flowing into the lake, while the monasteries and Lake Pleshcheyevo sit on different sides. Without a car, stay central: museums, cafes and the embankment are walkable. The lakeshore suits those after quiet and sunsets, with guesthouses and summer beaches; the Botik museum lies on the lakeshore outside town.
When to go
Summer brings Moscow weekenders, so lakeside rooms go early. Spring and autumn are quieter. In winter the lake freezes.
Getting there
The town is on the M-8 highway, about two hours' drive from Moscow. Buses run from Moscow; there is no passenger railway.
