Where to stay
Most places to stay on Olkhon are in Khuzhir, the island's main village, with guesthouses, lodges, shops and tours to the northern cape. Cape Burkhan with Shaman Rock is right by the village, with sunsets over the Small Sea. Khuzhir is busy and dusty in summer, with mostly unpaved streets. For quiet, look at lodges in bays outside the village, though without a car you are far from shops.
When to go
July and August are peak months; the ferry can have long queues. February and March bring the ice road and clear ice, a second peak.
Getting there
Khuzhir is about 300 km from Irkutsk, 5–6 hours by car or minibus. A ferry crosses the strait in about 20 minutes; during freeze-up and thaw, hovercraft run instead.
