Where to stay
The old city sits on the high bank where the Oka meets the Volga. Most visitors stay around the Kremlin: pedestrian Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street, the Upper Volga Embankment and the Chkalov Stairs are all close together, though the hills are steep. Rozhdestvenskaya Street below is full of bars and restaurants and loud at weekends. Kanavino, across the Oka, has the main station and the fairgrounds and is linked to the centre by metro.
When to go
May to September is the season for river walks and boat trips. May holidays, summer weekends, New Year and big trade fairs fill rooms early.
Getting there
The Lastochka train from Moscow takes about four hours; overnight trains also run. Strigino airport, south of the city, is served by buses and taxis.
