Nalchik is a green city at the foot of the Caucasus. The centre around Lenin Avenue has cafes, museums and theatres within walking distance of Atazhukinsky Garden, a large park with ponds and alleys. Dolinsk, higher up the slope towards the mountains, is the spa district with sanatoriums and quiet streets. Nalchik is a good base for the Chegem gorge waterfalls, the Blue Lakes and the Elbrus area.
Spring and autumn are most pleasant. Summer can be hot, cooler in Dolinsk. Many pass through in winter on the way to Elbrus.
Nalchik airport has flights from Moscow. A direct train from Moscow takes about a day and a half. The Elbrus area is about two hours by car.
