Murmansk rises in terraces above the Kola Bay. The centre around Lenin Avenue and Five Corners Square has most cafes, shops and hotels, and you can walk down to the bay and the nuclear icebreaker Lenin. The railway and sea terminals are right next to the centre, which is also the easiest starting point for aurora tours and trips to Teriberka. Hillside streets give bay views but get slippery in winter.
Auroras appear roughly September to March. Polar night lasts from about 2 December to 11 January; midnight sun runs late May to late July.
The airport lies south of the city near Murmashi, with buses and taxis. Trains from St Petersburg take about a day.
