The order is fixed and alphabetical; it does not depend on how much sellers pay us.
Where to stay
On a first trip, stay inside the Garden Ring: from Kitay-gorod, the Arbat, Tverskaya or Zamoskvorechye you can walk to Red Square. Zamoskvorechye and the lanes around Pokrovka are quieter than Nikolskaya and Tverskaya. Further out, being five minutes from a metro station on a direct line to the centre matters more than distance on the map. For early trains, look near Komsomolskaya Square with its three rail terminals.
When to go
Moscow works all year, but May to September is the time for parks and riverside walks. The May holidays and the New Year break are the busiest dates. November and March are grey and slushy but less crowded.
Getting there
Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo and Vnukovo airports are linked to the Belorussky, Paveletsky and Kievsky stations by Aeroexpress trains; buses and taxis also run. Most rail terminals sit on the metro's circle line.
