Where to stay
Krasnoyarsk's historic centre sits on the left bank of the Yenisei. The best base is around Mira Avenue and Theatre Square, with theatres, museums, cafes and the embankment with the museum steamer St Nicholas within walking distance. The Paraskeva Pyatnitsa chapel on Karaulnaya Hill offers the classic city view. The right bank is closer to the Stolby nature reserve and Bobrovy Log ski park, but evenings out mean crossing the river.
When to go
Summer suits hiking at Stolby. In winter the Yenisei stays unfrozen below the dam, wrapping the city in mist.
Getting there
Yemelyanovo airport lies north-west of the city, with buses and taxis. Trans-Siberian trains arrive from Moscow, Novosibirsk and Irkutsk.
