Kostroma's centre grew around Susaninskaya Square, with its fire tower and old trading arcades, a few minutes' walk from the Volga. Staying here keeps museums, cafes, bus stops and the Snow Maiden's house within reach. The Ipatiev Monastery and the wooden architecture museum lie across the Kostroma river; guesthouses there are quiet but need a bus or taxi to town. The railway station is well outside the historic area.
May to September brings Volga cruises and boat trips. The New Year holidays draw families to the Snow Maiden's home town, and central rooms go early.
A Lastochka train from Moscow's Yaroslavsky station takes about four hours; overnight trains also run. Many travel via Yaroslavl and continue by bus.
