Kirovsk is a mountain town above the Arctic Circle at the foot of the Khibiny, and you choose a base by the slope. Bolshoy Vudyavr is the main ski area; staying at its foot lets you walk to the lifts. The Kukisvumchorr slope lies further up the valley outside town. Central Kirovsk is compact, with cafes and shops. Neighbouring Apatity is larger and quieter, near the station and airport, but you will commute to the slopes.
Skiing runs roughly from late November to May. A short polar night falls in mid-December, and the dark months are northern lights season; March and April are sunny and busiest.
Khibiny airport near Apatity has flights from Moscow and St Petersburg. Trains run to Apatity station, then buses and taxis.
