Where to stay
Kazan's centre is compact: most visitors stay between the Kremlin, pedestrian Bauman Street and Lake Kaban, within walking distance of the sights. Bauman Street is lively and loud late into the night. The Old Tatar Quarter by Lake Kaban is quieter, with 19th-century houses and mosques, and still walkable to the Kremlin. The area by the main station is also close to the centre.
When to go
May to September is the season for walking and terrace cafes. Winter is cold and snowy, yet the New Year holidays are among the busiest dates, as are big sports events and festivals.
Getting there
A suburban train links the airport south of the city with the main station; buses and taxis run too. From Moscow, an overnight train arrives next to the Kremlin.
