Where to stay

Old Kaluga sits on a high bank of the Oka, and the historic centre is the most convenient base: between Teatralnaya Street, Kirova Street and the stone bridge over the ravine, with merchant houses, the trading arcades and parks in walking distance. Kirova Street is busy in the evenings; side streets are quieter. The space history museum lies a little apart, near the slope to the river. Kaluga also works as a base for Nikola-Lenivets and Optina Pustyn.

When to go

May to September is the nicest time; summer festivals nearby fill rooms early. Weekends and holidays bring many visitors from Moscow.

Getting there

Fast trains from Moscow's Kievsky station take about 2–2.5 hours. Kaluga also has a small airport with domestic flights.
