Where to stay
Irkutsk is the gateway to Lake Baikal and worth a couple of days itself. The best base is the centre on the right bank of the Angara: Karl Marx Street, the Lower Embankment, Gagarin Boulevard and the 130th Quarter with restored wooden houses, cafes and craft shops, all walkable. The station is on the left bank, handy for the Trans-Siberian and the Circum-Baikal Railway. Many stay a night before heading to Listvyanka, about 70 km away on Baikal.
When to go
June to August is warm and busy. February and March draw visitors to Baikal's clear ice.
Getting there
The airport is almost in town, a few kilometres from the centre. Trans-Siberian trains arrive from Moscow, Krasnoyarsk and Ulan-Ude.
