Derbent is one of Russia's oldest cities, and its main sights lie in the old town between the Naryn-Kala fortress and the sea: walls, gates, narrow lanes of the old quarters and the Juma mosque. Staying there lets you walk everywhere, but the streets are steep and hard for cars. Lower down, near the sea and the station, are newer districts and the waterfront. Beach resorts line the coast north and south of town.
May, June and September to mid-October suit sightseeing. July and August are hot but are the Caspian swimming season, when seaside stays are in highest demand.
Fly to Makhachkala, then about two hours by taxi or bus along the coast; suburban trains also run. Long-distance trains stop in Derbent.
