Where to stay
Chelyabinsk is a large industrial city, and the centre is the most convenient base. The pedestrian Kirovka runs from Revolution Square towards the Miass river, lined with sculptures, cafes and shops, with theatres nearby. The station area in the south of the centre suits short stops. Many use the city as a starting point for the Urals: Lake Turgoyak, Taganay and Zyuratkul, moving on to Miass or Zlatoust after a night.
When to go
July and August suit lakes and hiking; lakeside lodges fill early. Winters are cold, with skiing nearby.
Getting there
Balandino airport lies outside the city. Flights from Moscow take about two and a half hours; trains take over a day.
