Arkhangelsk stretches along the Northern Dvina, and its long riverside promenade is the nicest part. Staying nearby puts the old trading arcades and museums minutes away. Parallel runs Chumbarova-Luchinskogo Avenue, a pedestrian street of 19th-century wooden houses. Lenin Square and Troitsky Avenue form the business centre, handy for the station and airport, and a good base for trips to Malye Korely or the Solovetsky Islands.
Summer brings white nights and mild weather; June and July are the busiest. Winter is long, with short days and occasional northern lights.
Talagi airport is outside the city. Trains from Moscow take 16 hours to a day.
