Where to stay
Alushta is the closest south-coast resort to Simferopol and noticeably calmer than Yalta. The centre by the seafront suits those without a car. Professorsky Ugolok, west of the centre, is a greener area of sanatoriums along a pebble beach, linked to town by the promenade. Villages such as Partenit, Malorechenskoye and Rybachye are quieter still. Mount Demerdzhi and the Angarsky Pass are close, so Alushta works as a hiking base.
When to go
Swimming runs June to September, busiest from mid-July through August. May and October are better for hiking.
Getting there
Reach Simferopol by train or bus via the Crimean Bridge, then take the intercity trolleybus, a bus or a taxi. Check whether Simferopol airport is operating.
